An AI video budget needs to cover the attempts you make, including the clips you decide not to use. Start with your required duration and output settings, check the price for that exact configuration, and reserve room for revisions. Compare candidates only after their billing units and creative requirements line up.
A useful starting calculation: budget divided by the cost of one attempt gives the number of attempts you can afford. The number of usable clips depends on the results you actually keep. Until you have tested your workflow, treat any estimate of that number as a planning assumption.
Define the shot first
Before looking for the lowest price, define the output you need. A silent landscape concept and a vertical clip with generated audio are different jobs. A model that cannot meet your required duration or input workflow should not enter the same price comparison. Use the video model catalog to find candidates, then check their individual requirements.
Copy this brief into your notes:
Input: Text, a starting image, or another supported reference workflow
Intended placement: Where you will use the video
Duration per clip: Required generated seconds
Framing and resolution: Required aspect ratio and output size
Sound: Required, optional, or not needed
Finished clips: How many distinct clips you need to keep
Spending limit: Your maximum total for this exercise
If no two models support the same requirements, compare them as different options with different compromises. Do not describe that as a controlled quality comparison.
Compare billing units
APIXO's API pricing reference lists model pricing with different units. A price per generated second and a price per video need different calculations. Model pages such as Kling 2.5 Turbo Pro and Wan 2.6 describe their own supported workflows and duration choices.
For a configuration billed per second:
Cost per attempt = price per second × billable generated seconds
For a fixed price per video:
Cost per attempt = quoted price for one video at the selected settings
Dividing a fixed video price by its duration gives a normalized comparison rate. It does not mean the service bills proportionally for arbitrary durations. Use the actual permitted duration and the applicable quote.
For the creative workspace, check the price shown before creating. Keep that quote separate from API pricing and from a model card's starting price. Check whether sound, resolution, or another selected option changes what you will pay.
Budget for revisions
Suppose a hypothetical workflow costs $0.40 per attempt and you set aside $8.00. Those are invented planning inputs, not current APIXO prices.
Affordable attempts = floor($8.00 / $0.40) = 20
If you plan for four finished clips, that allowance averages five attempts per clip. You could decide to use no more than two attempts on each initial idea and save the remaining allowance for the strongest candidates.
That allocation is a spending rule, not a prediction that any attempt will succeed. Stop or change the brief when a sequence of results fails the same requirement. Repeating the same idea without recording why it fails makes the budget harder to manage.
After you have real results, calculate:
Cost per usable clip = actual charged spend / number of clips kept
If you keep no clips, cost per usable clip is undefined. Record the spend and zero usable clips rather than reporting a misleading zero cost. For cost per usable second, count only the footage you can actually use; retries and discarded clips still belong in the spend.
Check offer terms separately
If an offer is shown to you, check its eligibility, eligible models, duration, expiry, usage cap, and whether it applies to the workspace or API. Record the regular quote and the offered quote separately.
Use a percentage discount in your calculation only when those terms actually apply:
Do not apply a single percentage to the entire budget if only some attempts qualify. A bonus balance, a coupon, and a reduced per-generation price can affect your spending differently. Use the account's displayed terms and final quote rather than assuming they are interchangeable.
This article does not claim that a particular discount is currently available.
Track each attempt
Record each attempt: number; model and exact settings; quote before generating; actual charge after completion; kept (yes/no); reason.
Example attempt 1: record the model, settings and quote before generating; record the actual charge, whether you kept the clip, and a brief reason afterwards.
Keep the input and output files alongside the log. Note the observation date, currency, and any applicable offer. Distinguish a failed request from a completed clip you rejected: do not assume a refund rule without checking the account's actual billing record.
Once you have a few results, you can revise your budget using observed costs and outcomes. Avoid carrying a measured keep rate from one scene into a completely different workflow without testing it.
Common questions
Is the cheapest model always the cheapest way to finish a clip?
The lowest quoted attempt price does not establish the lowest cost per usable clip. A less expensive attempt may still require more revisions for your particular brief. Conversely, a higher price does not prove better results. Measure spend and the clips you keep before drawing a conclusion.
Can I compare a ten-second result with two five-second results?
You can compare the spending, but they are different creative deliverables. Two separate clips may require editing and may not provide continuous action. Record the difference and include any assembly work relevant to your decision. Do not call the result a comparison at identical settings.
Try a bounded experiment
Use the first image-to-video guide to define a simple shot, then choose a spending limit before opening the APIXO workspace. Record the quote, generate, review, and update your plan using what happened.
